How would you feel, if I tell you that there is a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean that still remains fully virgin. This island is more than 5.000km away from any populated land and its beauty is so, that in 1988 was added to Unesco’s list of World Heritage Site. The ecosystem is so rich, there are 10 plants and 4 land birds that are local to the island, the sand is white and the sea water is turquoise.

I’m guessing, you are as me, imagining a paradisiac island. Nothing further from the truth!! I am talking about Henderson Island, one of the most polluted places on earth. YES, you have read it right! This isolated paradise holds alone nearly 18 tonnes of plastic on its beach, that is around 4,500 items of plastic per square meter either laying on the beach or buried to a depth of 10cm, plus 13,000 new items arriving daily to the island.
Our oceans are so polluted that the water is transporting an incredible amount of plastic to this paradise and it is destroying not just one of the most remote places on earth, but also its incredible fauna. This phenomenon was studied and published in 2016 by the University of Tasmania, Australia. That same year the activist Alice Forrest went there to report about no matter how far away we are, we are destroying the habitat.
Plastic is a huge problem that most industries are facing including, of course, the fashion industry. This has a direct impact on our health, 25% of the fish we are consuming has plastic debris and we are indirectly consuming ourselves. It is our responsibility to avoid making this a bigger problem. It takes centuries for plastic to disappear, which means that all the plastic we have created still exist. So let’s be rational, let’s do it for us, future generations, animals, plants and Mother Earth. We need to stop consuming plastic, stop using disposable bottles, bags, fashion, cutlery and useless packaging. No matter which would be your motivation, as long it does accomplish our goal to fight this worldwide issue. Earth, our planet is the only home we have!!
