Christmas has turned into the time for consumerism, and as avoiding gifts seem almost impossible. Here, I have created a list with some great sustainable alternatives to give away this Christmas.
- Invest in an artisan’s piece. The only way we can ensure our craftsmanship and know-how remains alive is by purchasing and supporting the artisan and his/her family. Purchase a piece created by a local artisan, you will make two people happy in one shoot. I love the ceramics of Insula Craft, even though they have taken some time off, the beautiful linens of Espanyolet or the super stylish hairpiece from Saya Designs.
- A book is always a winner. When giving a book, you can be giving away a great adventure, a deep love story, a trip to a faraway land or a ticket for a time travel. The power of a book is measureless and it doesn’t have to require new resource if you decide to purchase a second-hand version.
- Give an experience. There is no need to consume an actual product to make a beloved one happy. Spending time and enjoying an activity together is a great gift. Organised a beautiful walk exploring a close by town, plan an outdoor picnic or invite friends over for a cooking class. Your time and effort is an incontable gift that can create memories that will last forever.
- Meaningful clothes. Choosing clothing for Christmas is a classic and also a guarantee of success. But it is about time to swap for a slow fashion brand. Some of my favourites are the gorgeous dresses of NAAV by Avneet Adwani or the new sustainable and super soft sneakers by Yuccs (which are a Spanish brand, making them even more special).
- Swap gifts. Why buying when you can swap? Organised a Secret Santa and intended of setting up a budget, set up a swapping rule. I am sure you have something at home that your friend or family member loves and will make them happy.
- A sustainable jewel. Jewels are a girl’s best friend, so make someone happy by giving the a sustainable piece of jewelry. Not that long ago, I got a bracelet from Aurum and love it!
- Think of someone else. Instead of consuming meaningless products make a donation to an NGO on someone’s behalf. The money will go to a good cause, most NGOS will send you a postcard to give away at Christmas and it will really touch their hearts.
Hope you include some of these options on your Christmas shopping list. Have I missed some great and sustainable ideas? Share them with me below!
